An idyllic destination located at the heart of Si Phan Don, Don Det island has slowly become one of the rising stars in the backpacker scene. With its dirt cheap accommodations and sleepy rural vibes, it has attracted tons of travelers in Laos -- some visiting for a couple of days, while others staying for a longer period of time.
Known for its relaxed nature, Don Det is usually associated with quiet mornings, sleepy afternoons in the hammocks, and tons of drinking at night.
While there aren't many hotels in the area, Don Det compromises it with its affordable accommodations -- most of which are still built in bungalows, lined with trees and adorned by morning calls from roosters.
Backpackers are in love with this place for its laidback lifestyle. Many travelers would usually find themselves kicking their feet up by the river or taking their bikes out for a leisurely cruise on the nearby streets. You can also take a dip in the waters or rent a tube and float down the Mekong River while you snack and grab a drink.
Other famous activities in Don Det are dolphin watching and kayaking. If you're looking for more adventure, you can also visit the Tat Somphamit waterfalls. Aside from the gorgeous falls, you can also dine in and relax at the restaurant and bungalows in the area. You can also visit Khon Pa Soi Falls if you want a more isolated and reclused area.
